Criterion Collection - April 2026 Releases
I've been catching up on some of the Criterion Collection releases that have come in this year. I don't know why I wanted to see Trouble in Paradise a second time, but it was probably because I didn't remember it from the first time. Criterion released the 4K of it in April and while its the best the movie has ever looked, I still don't care for it. Trouble in Paradise stars Herbert Marshall and Miriam Hopkins as con artists who pick their biggest target ever. The problems arise when Herbert Marshall's character stars falling for the target.
The other one I watched was the 4K release of Viridiana which came out in March. It was banned in Spain and denounced by the Vatican upon its release so it must be good. That's what I thought going in anyways. It stars Silvia Pinal as Viridiana a woman who is commanded to visit her uncle (Fernando Rey) before she takes her vows. A tragedy forces her to reevaluate her life by helping the paupers of the village. But even that makes her question her faith. In 2026, Viridiana certainly isn't as scandalous as it originally was, but there's still plenty of ickiness going on. While I liked this fine, I only wish it did more for me.
